Montessori education is an educational approach developed in the first half of the 20th century by Italian physician and educator Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori education features mixed-age groups, student-directed, constructivist learning, and a curriculum and materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators. Montessori education is practiced in an estimated 20,000 schools worldwide, serving hundreds of thousands of children from birth to eighteen.
